A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is the single most important document accompanying a research peptide. It tells you exactly what is — and is not — in the vial you received.
What a CoA should contain
- HPLC purity reading — the gold standard (≥99% is the benchmark)
- Mass spectrometry — confirms molecular identity
- Appearance and physical description — lyophilised powder, colour, etc.
- Batch and lot number — traceability
- Date of analysis — CoAs should be recent
Why ≥99% purity matters
Impurities in research peptides can come from synthesis by-products, incomplete purification, or degradation. Even 1% contamination can introduce variables that skew research outcomes. For reproducible results, ≥99% HPLC purity is the non-negotiable benchmark.
Red flags
- No CoA provided, or one that is undated
- Purity below 98%
- Missing mass spectrometry data
- Generic or template-looking reports without batch details
